The Oriental Hall, Cairo University

Cairo University, Giza, Egypt

The place

The Oriental Hall at Cairo University is a richly decorated ceremonial hall: mashrabiya screens and doors, marble columns with carved capitals, and a painted, gilded coffered ceiling. A medallion dated 1932 and a cartouche dated 1351 AH mark its decoration.

Memorial panels around the hall carry the names of scholars of the East, among them Silvestre de Sacy, Champollion, Gesenius, Fleischer, Nöldeke, Wellhausen, Maspero and Goldziher.

This experience

Walk through two reconstructions of the hall — the original Metashape model and a 2025 RealityScan re-scan that you walk at true size — plus a detailed scan of one of its chairs. On a computer, click the scene and use WASD and the mouse; it also runs in VR on Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro.
